Clarion Alley Mural Cuba x Estria x Ceyba
Here's a two day production I did with the legendary Cuba in San Francisco's famous Clarion Alley. It runs between Mission St. and Valencia St. between 17th and 18th Streets.
We painted this freestyle jam a week after the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle in October. It was a huge honor for me to finally paint with one of the first graffiti artists on the west coast. Cuba started painting in '79 in Baltimore and got serious in SF in '83. It was also an historic moment for me as it was my first mural in Clarion.

Cuba's health is not good, yet no complaints. He just got up on the ladder and did his thing. You got to admire that. Such a cool, humble cat. Doesn't call himself a king despite a long list of firsts under his belt. The man just loves to paint, and you can't help but feel that around him. It's contagious.

Clarion is well known as a mural alley. Whereas SF's first mural alley, Balmy Alley is known for political murals, Clarion is known for being open to subject matter. Yes it does include some hipster stuff.

Thanks to Ceyba for video taping and interviewing Cuba. (We'll post later.) Thank you also for bringing the family and homies and making it a great day to be alive in la Mission.

San Antonio- Cleaning up the Streets

I hit the Mexican Manhattan in the first of Oct 2009. 7th biggest city in the states should have dope paint, but it appears the city is trying to clean up the city, so most of the paint I found were white washes over previous work (I found tons of these above). Below are some of the none covered up pieces, nothing great, but after 3 days of hunting, that was all I found.

We can't do it without you...
Life is Living Festival is happening on Saturday, October 10th at Defremery Park in West Oakland. We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable working with screw guns for this Friday, October 9th to help build wood frames for the graffiti battle.
We really need your help! The work is fairly simple and if we get a lot of people, it will be done quickly. We will be building at the skate park side of the park on Friday from 9am-4pm. The actual festival is the following day from 11-5pm. Please contact me if you are available and interested.
The addresss is:
deFremery Park (Little Bobby Hutton)
1651 Adeline at 16th Street
Oakland, CA
Please email kanoe33@gmail.com to confirm your participation.
Estria will give you a Samurai Graphix t-shirt if you help us! We're begging!

The Campaign
LIFE is LIVING... is a national campaign that uses a new form of green spoken story telling- one that represents the changing perspectives on what it means to be environmentally just. We seek to inspire people to take the value they see in their LIFE and establish it powerfully as a new voice to define what it means to be logistically and psychologically included in the new, clean and green economies. The "Going Green Movement" is still largely perceived by those living in poor communities and communities of color as inaccessible or irrelevant. Capturing the living moments of people in these communities, we create a bridge of culturally relevant & personalized conversations. We see this as a method of increasing our communities' power to influence and benefit from the Green movement, as well as bringing LIFE to environmental injustices. The campaign includes a traveling environmental caucus & concert, an invitational Living Word Graffiti Battle, live action sports, and hands on Green building activities.

Doors

Ever since Graffiti went from the trains to the streets, doors have become a popular surface for writers in the city. For the most part doors offer a smooth surface conducive to markers and paint and are areas of high traffic offering the writer guaranteed visibility. Many doors attract tags from passing writers and end up swathed in marker, shoe polish, paint, and inks. Back alleys or street fronts, in Montreal you'll always find some bombed out doors. Here are some local doors that I have found over the last few years.

Mike Bam of Hawaii
Mike "Bam" Tyau has been one of my best friends since we were 18 (long time, don't ask). He was one of my best bombing partners because if either of us got the vibe, we would tell each other and get out of there, no questions asked. We would scope out a place, and sit in the bushes like ninjas for 45 minutes before we would hit a spot, just to be safe. Needless to say I never got caught with Mike.
When we were young, Mike was an inspiration to me to get better at my art. He could smoke me at painting, drawing, and airbrushing without even trying. He had that natural talent. I didn't have that, but his talent pushed me to work harder on my skills to catch up to his level. For that alone, I will always be indebted to him.
We still talk almost every day, and he's become a vital team member of our Estria Invitational Graffiti Battles. Mike is the embodiment of loyalty. He is the kind of guy whom everyone takes an instant liking to. He loves his wife, family and dog dearly, and is an inspiration to me as a person.
For the last three years, Mike has rediscovered his passion for art, and man is he back with a vengeance!
You can see Mike's work inside and out at 1:AM SF Gallery now until October 10, 2009.

Queen Andrea of NYC
Andrea von Bujdoss AKA "Queen Andrea" is a native New Yorker who was raised in the vibrant Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.
Andrea's passion for urban art and graphic design surfaced at an early age. In the early 1990s, she began to learn graffiti history and developed important friendships and mentoring relationships with some of the most notable New York City old school graffiti artists, like Reas, Ket and Wane One.
Queen Andrea competed in the our New York battle this past May. She also designed our flyer for the Oakland finals.
Visit her website superfreshdesign.com
Check out Queen Andrea's artwork in our EIGB-MTN art show at 1:AM SF Gallery.
Show runs until October 9.

As a young adult, Andrea attended Parsons School of Design where she earned her BFA in Graphic Design and graduated with academic honors. She then began a successful Graphic Design career, working for well-known brands who appreciate both the urban creative flavor of her work and her versatile and passionate knowledge of typography, branding and visual communication.

Andrea has curated and exhibited in numerous exhibitions in NYC.
As a die-hard New Yorker with a good sense of humor and an appreciation for the art of life, Andrea strives to create art and design that is culturally memorable and powerfully communicative.

These days, she is one of the most traditionally skilled female graffiti artists in the country, possessing an explosively creative style inspired by the excitement of the urban landscape. Her custom lettering portfolio has grown beyond graffiti and is a comprehensive collection of letter studies and design explorations. She has been featured in art shows, toy shows, magazines, books, fashion lines and brand collaborations.

From the Vault: 2003 Montreal Stylz
I first started taking notice of graffiti in 2003 when I moved downtown. I was living on the Ottawa Street at the bottom of Peel in Griffin Town. Besides a general interest I needed a focus for my academic work and decided that graffiti would be it. I took to the streets as often as I could and whever I could tracking through the city, alleyways, rooftops, highway system, anywhere and everywhere I saw a hint of paint. Most of these pics were taken at night with a pocket digital camera as it was the only time I was able to roam about aside from work and class. For the most part the pics came out ok. Some good stuff here from a few local hard hittin' bombers and crews, and some stuff from outta towners. In any case enjoy.
